Birthday CelebrationBirthday Celebration
I watch and listen as my daughter blows out the candles, laughing and surrounded by friends. In her voice I here my mother, recognize my father, detect echos of ancient ancestors, long dead, neither known nor knowing.
I see my image in her eyes and fathom myriads of generations, future and past, forever reflected forward and back like facing mirrors.
I wonder if she comprehends the continuum and realize that, as an adolescent, she is not yet aware. Her birthday is spent in oblivious bliss, the milestone marking me more than her.
One day, I know, she will recognize my voice, my face in a child or grandchild. In that moment of recognition, past, present and future will again celebrate as I celebrate now.
